The Story Behind “The Heart Part 5” Cover Art

Kendrick Lamar nearly broke the internet when he released a single titled, “The Heart Part 5” together with its visuals from his upcoming album. The cover art is a black background with six different hands and those hands are in fact the hands of the six individuals Kendrick changed into in the music video that were pulled from their pictures; OJ Simpson, Kanye West, Will Smith, Kobe Bryant, Nipsey Hussle and Jussie Smollet.

In the video, whenever Kendrick’S face changed into one of the six individuals I named above, he would start rapping in their perspective. “As I get a little older, I realize life is perspective and my perspective may differ from yours, I wanna say thank you to everyone that’s been down with me, all my fans, all my beautiful fans, anyone who’s ever given me a listen, all my people”, said Kendrick on the intro of the song. Two standout scenes (for me) were when he addressed the Grammy incident between Chris Rock and Will Smith, through Will Smith.

“In the land where hurt people, hurt more people, f*ck calling it culture.”

Followed by him changing into Nipsey Hussle who was fatally shot outside his store located in South Los Angeles on the 31st of March 2019 and rapping about his death and what he believes he would want his family to know about where he is right now.

“woke up that morning with more heart to give you
As I bleed through the speakers, feel my presence
To my brother, to my kids, I’m in Heaven
To my mother, to my sis, I’m in Heaven
To my father, to my wife, I am serious, this is Heaven
To my friends, make sure you countin’ them blessings
To my fans, make sure you make them investments
And to the killer that sped up my demise
I forgive you, just know your soul’s in question
I seen the pain in your pupil when that trigger had squeezed
And though you did me gruesome, I was surely relieved
I completed my mission, wasn’t ready to leave
But fulfilled my days, my Creator was pleased”

Kendrick Lamar

My motto in life is to, create and explore.
